  13. Dead air... - Nov 11,2008

    Listen
This week we tried a little something new with a href="http://www.budacast.hu"Budacast/a, the podcast I've been doing for 3 years now (wow!) - a totally LIVE show over the internet. While we can't say it went off without any hitches, the interactivity of the format was fun. br / p I carted all of my podcasting gear over to the a target="_blank" href="http://www.cij.hu/"strongCenter For Independent Journalism/strong/a and set up for the show on a target="_blank" href="../"strongBlog Talk Radio/strong/a about an hour early.br / br / I was excited to try and do a live show, because Blog Talk Radio (BTR) lets people call in or chat live with the host and guests through the site's infrastructure. It seems like an awesome way to get listeners involved. Visitors to the BTR site can see what programs are on live, so that's why I thought we'd try for a 2-hour long conversation, giving us a longer time to hook some unexpected listeners.br / br / Our guests were Matt Ellis who edits a target="_blank" href="http://www.pilvaxmag.com/"strongPilvax - Writing from Central Europe/strong/a about the latest edition of his magazine (which contains some translations of Hungarian work into English), and food guru Carolyn Banfalvi, who has authored books on Hungarian gastronomy and is editor of a target="_blank" href="http://www.chew.hu/"strongChew.hu/strong/a.br / br / Doing a live show after such a long time was no easy task. I couldn't get the sound streaming over the line for about the first 20 minutes, which was embarrassing. Suddenly, I figured it out. Still, the technical glitches had me a bit flustered the whole way through.br / br / Juggling two guests - both of whom were wonderfully forgiving - was also a challenge. I bounced back and forth, talking to Matt about his periodical and Carolyn about her books. I wasn't really satisfied with performance, but can't help but think that things will get better.br / br / If you haven't heard about them or the neat stuff that they're involved in here in Budapest, you're in for a real treat - be sure to check out the latest episode of Budacast, "a href="http://www.budacast.hu/shows/hungarian_literature_gastronomy.mp3"Found in Translation/a".br / br / By the time we were nearing the end of the 2 hours I was so fatigued at having to pay attention to the technical aspects of the format - operating the board, watching the chat, etc. - and trying (with a hangover from the election party) to think and ask my guests questions, that I know what I'll be doing differently next time.br / br / Thanks to everyone who tuned in and joined in in the chat room!br / br / Stay tuned!br / br / Uncle Drew/p BR/BR/a href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/search/first+show'first show/aa href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/first show.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/rss_tiny.gif' border='0' //aa href='itpc://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/first+show.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/itunes_trans.png' border='0' //a | a href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/search/live'live/aa href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/live.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/rss_tiny.gif' border='0' //aa href='itpc://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/live.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/itunes_trans.png' border='0' //a | a href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/search/budapest'budapest/aa href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/budapest.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/rss_tiny.gif' border='0' //aa href='itpc://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/budapest.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/itunes_trans.png' border='0' //a | a href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/search/europe'europe/aa href='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/europe.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/rss_tiny.gif' border='0' //aa href='itpc://www.blogtalkradio.com/rss/tag/europe.rss'img src='http://www.blogtalkradio.com/img/itunes_trans.png' border='0' //a BR/BR/

The project, going by the name of She and Him, is due out in March via a href="http://www.mergerecords.com/news.php"Merge Records/a. A few days ago, the label was kind enough to post a track, "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?", from She and Him's forthcoming release span style="font-style:italic;"Volume One/span, due out in March. The track is called "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?"br /br /Though the bio on the Merge Records uses Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt and The Zombies as musical reference points, "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" has a distinct Beatles flavor to it, especially in the song's piano hook and whimsical feel. The whole track has a breezy, jazzy feel, which is no doubt due to Deschanel's vocal phrasing. The song is so brief that it is seemingly over before it begins, but we're definitely charmed all the same.br /br /span style="font-style:italic;"Volume One/span is out in March.br /br /a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofilefriendid=211382 429"She and Him MySpace Fan Page/abr /br /(Jonathan Graef)

D. Godley, d. 1925/a/p blockquotepThe iHistories/i of Herodotus of Halicarnassus is considered the first work of history in Western literature. Written about 440 BC, the Histories tell the story of the war between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states in the 5th century BC. Herodotus traveled extensively around the ancient world, conducting interviews and collecting stories for his book. The rise of the Persian Empire is chronicled, and the causes for the conflict with Greece. Herodotus treats the conflict as an ideological one, frequently contrasting the absolute power of the Persian king with the democratic government of the Greeks. 29. Tier Splitting Volta: Who. What. How. Why - Part 2
  30. 12 Dec 2007 at 4:12pm
Erik Meijer and a small team of very sharp developers (including Brian Beckman) have cooked up an intriguing toolset for building multi-tier distributed applications: a href="http://labs.live.com/volta/"font color="#a55506"Volta/font/a.brbrWhen the Volta CTP release announcement hit the wire last week, the press declared Volta as a Java killer, etc. In reality, Volta is primarily, and most importantly, strong a tier splitting system where the details of the tiers aren't of primary importance/strong. brbrSo, the most obvious case is Silverlight as the client tier and a web server as the server tier... This is a stronggreat/strong scenario since Volta can split IL to IL without having to resort to IL translation to, say, JavaScript (which has gotten too much attention). brbrToo much has been made of the IL to Javascript translation capabilities, so much so that people are apparently not seeing the forest for the trees. Well, have no fear. Over the coming days you are going to learn more about Volta than you can imagine and the people who'll you learn from also happen to be the people who thought up and implemented Volta.brbrThis is part 2 where we continue to dig deeply into Volta. Lot's of whiteboarding and even a code sample using VS.brbrSee part 1 a href="/showpost.aspx?postid=365220"here/a.brbrTune in. 31. Tier Splitting Volta: Who. What. How. Why - Part 1

pErik Meijer and a small team of very sharp developers (including Brian Beckman) have cooked up an intriguing toolset for building multi-tier distributed applications: a href="http://labs.live.com/volta/"Volta/a.brbrWhen the Volta CTP release announcement hit the wire last week, the press declared Volta as a Java killer, etc. In reality, Volta is primarily, and most importantly, strong a tier splitting system where the details of the tiers aren't of primary importance/strong. brbrSo, the most obvious case is Silverlight as the client tier and a web server as the server tier... Over the coming days you are going to learn more about Volta than you can imagine and the people who'll you learn from also happen to be the people who thought up and implemented Volta.brbrIn this episode (or part 1, if you will) we meet the team and learn the basics. Since it's a room full of devs there is whiteboarding and lots of techincal talk, just the way we like it here on C9.brbrYou will be seeing much more of this great team over the coming days and Volta will make more sense with each epsiode, culminating in an Expert to Expert Going Deep where we a great deal of how Volta's tier splitting capabilities are implemented and get a clear picture of what a tier actually can be.brbrIt's all about tier splitting and ema tier is simply an execution context/em. Volta is much more than a emweb/em technology...brbrTune in.
